Settling In: My First Two Weeks in Bulgaria

It’s hard to believe that I’ve already been in Bulgaria for two weeks. Looking back, I’m really happy with how well I’ve adjusted to life here. Every day still brings something new, but I’ve found a routine that works for me.

One thing that has helped me a lot is writing everything down. Keeping checklists and making notes of my tasks makes it much easier to stay organised and remember what needs to be done. It’s a simple habit, but it has made a huge difference.

Life as a volunteer is a great balance between work and free time. There are always interesting jobs to do around the project, but I also have plenty of time to explore and enjoy new experiences. One of my highlights so far was going on a horse ride through the beautiful countryside. It was such a peaceful way to experience the landscape and take a break from everyday tasks.

One achievement I’m especially proud of was clearing the bee area from blackberry bushes and clematis. It was hard work, but seeing the area transformed afterwards was incredibly satisfying. During that task, I also learned how to use a scythe for the first time. I’ll admit, it looked quite intimidating at first, and it definitely took a few tries before I got the technique right. But once I found the rhythm, it became surprisingly enjoyable and very effective. I was amazed at how quickly I could clear large areas.

Back home, I would probably use a lawn mower for this kind of work. Here, using a scythe is a much more environmentally friendly option—and it’s an excellent workout too. I love learning these traditional skills and seeing that there are often simpler, more sustainable ways of doing things.

These first two weeks have already taught me so much. I’m growing more confident every day, learning practical skills I never expected to try, and enjoying the balance between meaningful work and unforgettable experiences. I’m excited to see what the next weeks will bring.
