24.th of May Celebtration

Last Sunday we walked to Zhelen (Желен), the village nearby. The walk is about one hour through nature.

When I arrived, I saw people sitting outside, some were dancing, eating, drinking and listening to Bulgarian music. The musicians were mostly elder men who played their instruments with incredible easiness. There were also two women as singers who performed songs that the people knew, and some sang along.

I was surprised that the celebration was quite big for a small village with 150 inhabitants in the summer.

The 24th of May is a national holiday in Bulgaria. People celebrate the Bulgarian culture, education and the Slavic literature. This day is dedicated to the two saints, who were brothers, Kyrill and Method. They invented the first Slavic alphabet, the Glagolitic writing. Later, it was developed to the Cyrillic alphabet, which is used in Bulgaria nowadays.

I am glad to have the opportunity to join a local festivity and listen to the Bulgarian music.
