A Weekend in Sofia

For a long weekend, I travelled to Sofia, where my boyfriend came to visit me. After being away from home for a while, it was really nice to see him again and spend some time together.

We spent a lot of time walking around the city and exploring different parts of Sofia. One of the first things I noticed was how different the city felt from the places I had seen in Bulgaria so far. Visiting the National Palace of Culture gave me a first impression of Sofia as a real Balkan capital and helped me get a better feeling for the city and its atmosphere.

We also visited the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of the most impressive buildings in the city. Walking through Sofia, we came across many different sights, including the Lion Bridge and the Princess Garden. I especially enjoyed discovering the many gardens and green spaces around the city. They gave Sofia a nice balance between the busy streets and quieter places to relax.

Another surprise for us was the food. We ate really well during the weekend, and I was especially surprised by how affordable many things were compared to what I’m used to. It was nice to sit down somewhere after walking through the city and enjoy good food without having to worry too much about the price.

More than anything, though, I enjoyed simply having the time together. Showing him a little bit of the country and my new surroundings made the weekend feel special.

After all the exploring, walking, eating, and sightseeing, I returned to my volunteering project feeling happy and refreshed. The weekend gave me a chance to enjoy a different side of Bulgaria while also having some much-needed time with a special someone from home.
