Washing Done Different: Eco-Friendly Laundry with Chestnuts

Washing with chestnuts, also known as washing nuts, is becoming increasingly popular. During our trips to places like Sofia or Tserovo, we collect chestnuts, which we dry and use the following year. Each of us should aim to gather about 6 kg. The chestnuts we use where gathered by other volunteers from last year.

How It Works

First, we break 3 to 4 chestnuts and place them in a glass of water, where they soak overnight. This allows the chestnuts to release saponins, which act like surfactants and help dissolve dirt. After shaking, foam forms due to the saponins. To enhance the cleaning effect, we mix the water with a small amount of potassium crystals, which act as a softener.

Sustainability

A major advantage of this method is its reusability: the nuts can be used up to three times. This helps reduce plastic waste and protect the environment. And its also good for your bankaccount 😉

Conclusion

Washing with chestnuts is a simple and effective method. By collecting chestnuts, we contribute to a more mindful approach to our environment. Next time in Sofia: bring your bags and collect chestnuts — for clean laundry and a cleaner planet!
