Relationships…
In the midst of the majestic Bulgarian mountains, we work and live as volunteers in a special, nature-oriented, and spiritual project. Every day here is a challenge, but also an opportunity to step out of our comfort zones and grow together as a team. Our group consists of seven volunteers, who arrived at different times in the summer. This constant change has influenced our dynamics in interesting ways – each new person brings a fresh breeze and a new perspective. Early on, we were able to practice sharing our knowledge with the “newbies.”
Challenging Collaboration with Growing Dynamics
Collaboration in such an intense and isolated environment is not always easy, but it is immensely enriching. It is exciting to observe the development of our communication and the interaction within the group. At its core, we are a wonderful team – each of us brings unique talents and skills that support us in our daily tasks and responsibilities.
One volunteer organized French lessons, while another accompanies our communal singing with her guitar. Another volunteer offers us theater lessons, helping us express ourselves better and be creative. We don’t just handle daily tasks like cooking, cleaning, and laundry – the distribution of responsibilities is often planned, but we quickly realize it’s more than just work. We support each other and make sure that everyone in the group gets the help they need. When someone is sick or having a bad day, the others ensure that they get back on their feet.
The strong bond shows especially in the small, unsolicited gestures. Sometimes, a simple “Do you need a hug?” or help with a handful of tasks when someone has a lot on their plate is all it takes. These small moments of care are, for me, the most valuable part of living together with the others.
The Importance of Communication
One of the greatest challenges in our group is constant communication. We live and work in a remote part of the world, where the external conditions are not always easy. Daily task distribution and working together in this unique environment often require creative solutions and a lot of patience. Every morning and evening, we hold a meeting where we exchange our feelings and discuss the plan for the day. It is not always easy to recognize and express our own needs – a valuable exercise that strengthens us as a team.
Special Moments of Connection
Beyond the daily challenges, it is the special moments that truly unite us as a group. Two trips in the summer are experiences that particularly stand out in my memory. We rented a car and drove to Plovdiv, where we spent the day exploring and connecting. Another time, we took the train to Veliko Tarnovo for Independence Day, where we enjoyed a spectacular fireworks display together and explored the city’s sights. On a volunteer’s birthday, we visited an escape room together and tackled challenges as a team.
However, for me, it’s not the big events that mean the most, but the small gestures of togetherness. Like the quiet support when someone is having a hard day, or the naturalness of sharing tasks when needed. The silent moments of riding out together, the evening gossip sessions by the warmth of the fireplace, the jokes and insider humor, or the long, deep conversations in the field with a view of the mountains – these moments of care make our community truly special.
Conclusion
Working together in our project is challenging but also characterized by a unique harmony. In the midst of Bulgaria’s rugged nature, without the comforts of the modern world, we rely on one another and grow both as individuals and as a team. Constant communication, mutual support, and shared experiences create a deep bond that is valuable for all of us. We tackle the challenges together, and in doing so, experience anew each day what it means to live and work as a team in such an extraordinary environment.
