Our Chickens and Their Care: From Compost Feeding to Fresh Eggs
We currently have three chickens. They are fed with our compost, which accumulates from our cooking. In addition to the compost, we give them various grains and cereals. They also receive calcium powder, which they use to produce eggs. It is very interesting to observe how the eggshells become stronger when they consume more powder and how they thin out when the chickens eat less. Occasionally, we also give them the shells of their own eggs to eat. It is important for them to produce strong eggs, otherwise, they might try to eat their own eggs. They use their beaks to test whether the egg is stable and worth keeping. If not, the egg will be eaten.
We use the chickens’ eggs for cooking; they provide us with a good source of protein. A chicken can lay one egg per day. It feels good to know where the eggs we eat come from.
Watching the chickens is very interesting; it’s enjoyable to study their behavior and discover something new each time. I like to spend time observing them as they scratch and peck around.
