Loud Bells with Lots of Fur
The Surva Festival in Pernik, Bulgaria, is an impressive experience deeply rooted in Bulgarian tradition. It’s a fascinating festival that attracts thousands of visitors every year to celebrate the cultural diversity and heritage of the country. I had the chance to experience two out of the three festival days, and it was an unforgettable experience.
The costumes of the participants, especially the masked figures and the huge, clanging bells, are not only a visual highlight but also a symbolic element deeply anchored in Bulgarian folklore. The costumes and traditional attire reflect ancient customs and rituals that have played an important role in the country’s history. The unique masks and garments, with their vibrant colors, craftsmanship, and the imposing, resonating bells, are simply breathtaking.
What particularly moved me were the children, who were also part of the parade, alongside groups from villages across the country. Dressed in their little costumes, they danced with joy and energy, making the festival even more enchanting. It was a wonderful sight to see the next generation immerse themselves in these ancient traditions, keeping them alive. It touches me to see children follow in the footsteps of their ancestors, carrying forward the history of their families and their country with new motivation and influences.
The opening on the first evening was another highlight. On a large stage, breathtaking performances were presented: dances, acrobatics, fire performances, and traditional music played by both orchestra and band. These performances celebrated Bulgarian culture with great diversity and creativity.
In addition to the performances, there were countless stalls offering typical Bulgarian delicacies, sweets, and handmade souvenirs. These stalls helped make the festival feel even more vibrant and inviting. The entire event was a wonderful opportunity to dive deeper into the traditions and cultural life of Bulgaria, and to understand and experience the significance of customs and community in the country.
It was an experience I will always cherish.
The costumes with their loud bells, and the Bulgarian men and women dancing in their beautiful traditional attire, have earned a special place in my heart.
