A unforgettable journey
We set out from the Vegetarium early in the morning, while it was still dark. Walking to the station in Tserovo, we waited for the train to Sofia. Once in the city, we picked up a few supplies from a supermarket before boarding the bus to Rila.
When we arrived, it was raining lightly. We reached the lift, which took us up to a cabin where we waited for Filip. He came to meet us, helping and guiding us along the path to the camp. As we walked, I couldn’t believe how beautiful everything was. I never imagined that my own country could hold a place so different, so full of magic.
Before long, we saw the first lake – and it truly took my breath away. At the camp, we settled in, stepping into the tents that Filip had prepared for us. The whole area felt like a dream: the people were kind and hospitable, and the food was delicious – you could tell it was made with love. Every time someone cooked (and it was always someone different), they would sing and play music for the food. It was such a beautiful practice. Music filled the camp: violins, flutes, and warm voices created an atmosphere of joy and connection.
The first few days were cold and rainy. On the very first night, the thunder was so loud it echoed through the mountains. But little by little, the weather grew warmer. It amazed me how the climate could change so drastically in just one week.
Every morning at 10 a.m., we had Paneurhythmy – dancing together in the open air, surrounded by the mountains. It was beautiful, and it made me feel deeply connected both to myself and to everyone around me. One morning, just before the dance, a violinist I had spoken with the day before taught me a little bit of violin. It was magical – I hadn’t played since I was a child, and in that moment, I think I fell in love with the violin all over again.
There was plenty of free time to explore the mountains. I visited all seven lakes, discovered even more hidden spots, and saw an ice cave. I walked endlessly, surrounded by breathtaking nature. I met so many people, and our conversations were always fascinating and full of new perspectives.
Spending a whole week in Rila was an unforgettable experience. In some ways, it felt like a month – so much happened in such a short time, the weather changed countless times, and I became so accustomed to the place. Yet at the same time, it felt as if it all passed in a single second. Just as I had grown used to the camp and truly felt at home, it was time to leave.
On the way back, our group grew – more people decided to return to the Vegetarium with us and spend a few more days there. It was lively and fun, and the very first thing I did when we arrived was take a long, warm shower.
Looking back, I’m deeply grateful for everything I learned and experienced in Rila. That week will stay in my heart forever.
Rila wasn’t just a trip, it was an awakening.
