Exploring Extremaadura
This week I was on my vacation that I took for winter and I used the opportunity to open a new region in my home country where I have not been before. Tis region is Extremadura located in the south west of Spain. This region is famous because of many different aspects going from the gastronomical experience to the historical value of the region. In my trip I travelled through three different places exploring amazing old streets, trying the most unusual restaurants and walking around roman ruins.
My first stop was the city of Plasencia which I will especially remember because of its old town. The streets there are narrow and surrounded by old buildings that transport you to the middle ages. The main square “Plaza Mayor” Is the center of cultural and social activity of the city as it is surrounded by a huge amount of restaurants and cafes where the neighbours meet to talk or even play cards. When I was there I was lucky enough to observe a national Spanish dance on Sunday morning which was accompanied by live music with the Spanish guitar. under these melodies I continued my journey to the next stop in the trip.
The second city I visited was Merida. This city was particularly striking by its roman ruins which are located all around the city. It is Impressive how the city was raised over an old roman city and you can still visit amazing sites such as the roman theater which is very well preserved or the diana Temple. My favorite place here was the theater where you could sit and observe the impressively well keps stage that still had some sculptures reminding of the amazing impact that the Romans had in Spain and Europe overall. Here I also had the chance to try for the first time the national dish of Croquetas with squid. I really loved the city and I would definitely want to come back and submerge into its history a bit more in detail.
My final stop was the village of trujillo. Here the most impressive aspect was to see how such a small place could create an atmosphere that made me feel really like in a fantasy world. The architecture is developed ina an old style with unrealistic towers and bridges and even a cathedral dating back to the middle ages. There is also a fortification at the top of the hill wich was also worth the visit. This village even if small really made me amazed and definitely a revisit is an option I am considering.
Overall the trip was very complete and dynamic as I managed to see quite a lot of different places and experience all type of atmospheres related to the ancient rome while accompanied by the traditional spanish music and the taste of the food.
