Connecting with Nature and Spirit: My Experience at the White Brotherhood Gathering
From August 11th to 17th, I was with another volunteer in the Rila Mountains at the so-called White Brotherhood. This religious community (sometimes referred to as “esoteric Christianity”) was founded in 19th century by Petar Danov.
Every year, hundreds of people dressed in white dance in a circle on the meadows by the Seven Rila Lakes, facing the sun. The ritual is called “Paneurhythmy,” and through it, the followers of Petar Danov’s teachings connect with each other and with nature. Live music is played in the center of the circle, and the 28 exercises that make up the dance are performed around it.
On August 19th, followers from all over Bulgaria and around the world gather at the meadows by the Seven Lakes to celebrate their spiritual New Year.
We slept in tents in the nature reserve near the Seven Lakes. The camp had a kitchen where people came together and ate. The food was incredibly delicious. For breakfast, there was porridge with fruits and honey, and for lunch, there was very tasty homemade bread and stews, such as those with cabbage or beans. No oil was heated here either. The same dietary rules applied as at home in Trinoga.
Every morning, we could watch the sunrise and greet it with others. There were prayers and singing. At 10 a.m., we danced with a partner for 1.5 hours. Various activities were offered throughout the day, including concerts, readings, and more. Thanks to the incredibly impressive nature, hiking was also an option.
The people were incredibly kind, open, and interesting. I had conversations with many people from different countries. Overall, it was a magical experience in a magical place. I am very grateful to have been part of it.
