W 15 – fall preparations

There has been a drop in temperatures at Vegearium, with the nights dropping down to 4 degrees and days hovering around 15C. We have now been preparing for the winter for a few weeks. The winter here sets some restrictions compared to life in summertime. We have been told that access to supplies might be cut off, that because of the snow there might be disruptions with the electricity, and that the cold creeps inside the houses. Therefore, we have been preparing for these challenges.

One task has been to bring firewood from the forest. There are trees that have fallen that we cut into pieces and bring to the house with a tractor. I had the opportunity to learn how to operate the small tractor. After bringing the wood, we arrange it in the shed. We have had the possibility to use the firewood to light a small fire in our rooms to heat them up on the coldest nights.

We have also collected a colorful selection of potatoes. I say colorful because there are at least three different potato species – yellow, blue and purple. The unusual potatoes include micronutrients that are beneficial to our health. Filip has brought things like grains for general storage, and we have been busy arranging them in the storage room.

It has been a delight to witness the change of seasons here from summer to autumn. Now it is the time to plant trees from tree nurseries and to plant winter greens. We keep collecting the fall harvest and preparing the place for the colder months.
