Growing Tomatoes

During my time volunteering, I have learned a lot about growing and caring for tomatoes. Before this, I had never really thought about how much knowledge and regular care is needed to help a tomato plant grow healthy and produce good fruit.

One of the first things I learned was how the plant grows. There is a main stem, which produces side shoots. However, when another shoot grows in the space between the main stem and a side shoot, it is removed. This process is called pinching out or pruning. These extra shoots would not produce useful fruit and would only take energy away from the rest of the plant.

Towards the end of the tomato season, usually around the end of August, the flowers are also removed. At this point, the plant will no longer have enough time to turn these new flowers into ripe tomatoes. By removing them, the plant can focus all of its energy on the tomatoes that are already growing.

It is also possible to cut off the top of the tomato plant, sometimes called the head of the plant. This stops it from continuing to grow upwards. Otherwise, a tomato plant can keep growing and producing new shoots, even when there is no longer enough time in the season for new tomatoes to develop.

I also learned about rust mites, which can cause the leaves of tomato plants to curl and turn brown. They often become a problem when the plants have not received enough water and are already weakened.

Another important lesson is finding the right balance when removing leaves. If a tomato plant has a lot of leaves, some can be removed to improve airflow and give the fruits more space and light. However, the plant still needs enough leaves to regulate water through transpiration. If too many leaves are removed, the tomatoes can be more likely to split.

It has been really interesting to see how many small decisions can affect the health and growth of a plant. Something that seems as simple as growing tomatoes actually requires observation, patience, and knowing when to let the plant grow and when to step in and give it a little help.
