Four Days in the Rila Mountains
I spent four days in the Rila Mountains with Annika. And it made me find out a few things about Bulgaria, the believes of the White Brotherhood and also myself.
What struck me most was the sense of peace, community, warmth, and helpfulness we experienced. Life in the mountains felt much simpler and slower, and I really enjoyed being able to step away from the busyness of everyday life. It made me realise how much I sometimes need this kind of quiet.
We also had the opportunity to experience different religious traditions in a very practical way. We were welcomed into the community of the White Brotherhood. They are currently camping in the Rila Mountains and celebrating their beliefs. We could learn about a different faith and even experience some of its customs, such as morning prayer. It was a beautiful and educational experience to see how faith can shape everyday life and community.
Another special part of the trip was meeting people from many different nationalities. I was happy whenever I met someone who also spoke German, because suddenly there was a familiar connection. At the same time, I realised that where someone comes from doesn’t have to separate us. I had wonderful conversations with people from completely different backgrounds, and our different origins often made the conversations even more interesting.
The mountains also taught me something about slowing down in a very literal way. When walking through the mountains, you have to pay attention to every step. A moment of carelessness or one wrong step can have serious consequences. There was something almost meditative about having to concentrate on the path, your surroundings, and the next step instead of thinking about everything else.
And then there was the landscape. The mountains were absolutely beautiful. Being surrounded by nature, forests, and wide views reminded me a little of home. It even made me feel a bit homesick, which I hadn’t really expected. At the same time, it made me appreciate both where I come from and the new place I am getting to know.
These four days were a beautiful reminder that sometimes less really is more: less noise, less rushing, fewer distractions, and more time for people, nature, reflection, and simply being present.
